Ad Access - Free access to more than 7,000 magazine and newspaper ads from the years 1911-1955. Search by keyword or browse categories.

Advertising Age - The free portion of this well-known magazine's web site offers occasional clips of current TV ads, as well as opinion and analysis. (Not all material at the site is free.)

American Communication Journal  The American Communication Journal is the premier online scholarly refereed journal dedicated to the study of communication. Published by the American Communication Association.

Advertising Resources

Ad Council - The Ad Council produces "public service announcements" or PSA's. Clips of some current TV PSA's are available free at the site, along with some well-known historical PSA's.

Adflip - Archive of notable ads which appeared in print magazines. Some items are free, but requires a fee for access to the complete archive.

AdWeek "Best Spots"  - AdWeek's best spots offers one or two free videos of current notable TV ads. Descriptions and one screen capture are provided for all older spots. (Copies can be ordered for a fee.)

Audio Online: UC Berkeley Speech Archives - A selection of audio files of speeches delivered by notable people at UC Berkeley. Requires RealPlayer or StreamWorks plug-ins, for which links are provided.

Propaganda Analysis - An interesting guide to the techniques of propaganda. Includes a brief bibliography and clips from propaganda films (requires RealPlayer).

General Resources

Collection Finder: American Memory From the Library of Congress - Provides digitized versions of documents, maps, motion pictures, photos & prints, and sound recordings ranging from the 1400s to today. Collections are variously arranged by broad topics (e.g., agriculture, history, performing arts), time, place (e.g., Northeast U.S., international), Library of Congress library division, and digital format (e.g., JPEG, SGML, etc.).

Evaluating Web Pages - TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html  Techniques to Apply and Questions to Ask, a site created and maintained by Joe Barker at the University of California-Berkeley Library.

Finding Data on the Internet - A handy page for beginning journalists. Provides links to US government and other Web sites other offering data on topics including agriculture, crime, economics, education, health, law and politics, the military and more.

Media and Communication Studies Site (MCS) - This site is a British-based gateway to Web resources related to the study of media and communication. 

FILM RESOURCES

American Film Institute - Site explores new digital technologies in entertainment and education, and maintains films historical developments.

Films Selected to the National Film Registry, Library of Congress, 1989-2002 -

Internet Movie Database (IMDb) - Large database of movies and television shows.

PUBLIC SPEAKING RESOURCES

Allyn & Bacon Public Speaking Web Site- Created as a companion for a public speaking textbook, this site offers guidance and resources for students preparing speeches.

American Leaders Speak - From the Library of Congress, recordings of speeches from World War I and the 1920 Presidential election. Uses RealPlayer. Text transcriptions also provided.

American Rhetoric - Includes a searchable "SpeechBank" of famous speeches, sound clips demonstrating use of rhetorical figures, 100 Great American Speeches, and a special section on the rhetoric of 9/11.

Debate Central - From the National Center for Policy Analysis, includes resources for debaters and speechmakers. Focuses on the current National Forensic League topic.

Douglass: Archives of American Public Address - Text of American speeches, mainly from the 19th century, but featuring some 20th century speakers. Find speakers by name or time period. Also offers links to professional speech organizations.

Gifts of Speech - Texts of speeches by women, mostly contemporary, including Nobel Prize winners, authors, and politicians.

History and Politics Out Loud (slow loading)- Streaming audio recordings of famous modern speeches. Requires RealPlayer.

History of Televised Presidential Debates - Transcripts, video clips, and other material for the study of presidential debates from 1960-2000 and their impact on public opinion.

Statistics Sources

U.S. Census Bureau -The U.S. Census Bureau is the primary source of statistical information on the American population. Statistics on state and local governments, manufacturers, and a variety of other topics are also collected by the Bureau and offered at the site.

American Communication Association (ACA) - The American Communication Association (ACA) promotes "... academic and professional research, criticism, teaching, practical use, and exchange of principles and theories of human communication."

Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) -A non-profit, educational association of journalism and mass communication faculty, administrators, students and media professionals.

International Communication Association (ICA) - Founded in 1950, the ICA's membership includes scholars, government officials and other individuals from around the world who share an interest in the study of human communication.

National Communication Association (NCA) -Founded in 1914, The National Communication Association (NCA) is the is the oldest and largest national organization to promote communication scholarship and education. The purpose of the Association is to promote study, criticism, research, teaching, and application of the artistic, humanistic, and scientific principles of communication.

Federal Election Commission (FEC) Home Page - The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is an independent agency of the United States government with duties comprising the disclosure of campaign finance information, enforcement of limits and prohibitions on political contributions for federal elections and oversight of the public funding of presidential elections.

National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) - The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is the Executive Branch's principal voice on domestic and international telecommunications and information technology issues."
