Endowments
An endowment is a gift that is really the donor’s lifetime investment in a charitable endeavor about which he or she cares. Whether the donor wishes to:
  • Establish a named scholarship endowment for students who are studying to be teachers
  • Provide funding for and name an academic program, such as our nursing program
  • Establish an endowed professorship in the College from which he or she graduated
  • Add to an already established endowment
The donor knows that his or her gift is going to keep on giving—forever.

Why is this the case?  The donor’s gift (the corpus) is invested by the institution to which it was given in as prudent a way as is possible.  Only a percentage of the income derived from that investment is used on behalf of the cause the donor wishes to support each year.  In the case of the CSUSB Foundation, which oversees gifts that are given to sustain the mission of the Palm Desert Campus, that percentage is five (5%).

The minimum investment necessary to establish an endowment is $10,500. A one-time fee—5% of the initial gift given to establish the endowment—is directed to the CSUSB Foundation and covers the costs associated with managing the endowment.

Information regarding the protocols and steps to take in order to establish an endowed scholarship are explained in the section of this website called “Student Scholarships.”  Just click on the words and you’ll be directed to the webpage that describes how to establish a scholarship.

The Palm Desert Campus has several priority needs that we’d like our supporters to know about and consider:

The RN to BSN Program- $1,000,000
We are asking one of our supporters to consider establishing an endowment to sustain our hybrid, on-line Bachelor of Science in nursing program for working nurses who want to pursue a baccalaureate degree in nursing while on the job.  Each year, the University has to generate $50,000 to cover the cost of educating each cohort of nurses in this program, above and beyond the support it receives from its funding partners, such as the region’s three hospitals, and student fees.  For an investment of $1,000,000 in an endowment established to sustain the RN to BSN Program, the donor could also name the program, perhaps to honor someone who has made a life-saving difference in his or her life.

Four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program-$2,500,000
The University has recently entered into an agreement with College of the Desert to jointly initiate a Bachelor of Science in nursing program.  The goal is to recruit high school students and other Coachella Valley residents into the program, which they can complete without having to leave the Valley—something that has not been possible until now. Beginning four years from this September, this program will provide a steady stream of approximately 40 nurses with BSN degrees each year, to serve the Coachella Valley’s healthcare needs.

For an investment of $2.5 million in an endowment which would help sustain this program, the donor could also name it.

Endowed Chair in Nursing - $2,500,000
The nurses who graduate from the University’s nursing programs achieve a very high level of competence because the programs are focused on developing in nursing students the two qualities that all great nurses have—excellent assessment skills and the ability to view their patients as whole human beings whose medical conditions are impacted by many factors outside of the presenting medical problem.  One of the doctors who works at a local hospital said to one of the nurses in our RN to BSN program, “You’re back in school, aren’t you?  It’s obvious in the assessments of patients you are caring for.”

In order to take our nursing programs to an even higher level of excellence, we would like to hire a doctorally-qualified nursing professor who could oversee the development of all the nursing programs situated on the Palm Desert Campus and function on the forefront of nursing education—which will enable the university to attract more philanthropic support as well as build its academic reputation.  In order to attract such a person, we would like to establish an endowed chair in nursing.  For a $2.5 million gift, a donor could endow and name the nursing chair.

Palm Desert Campus Endowment
As the Palm Desert Campus continues to grow, it will have a variety of needs.  Some will be associated with the construction of new buildings and the further development of the campus grounds.  Some will have to do with the general operating expenses such as adding technology for new classes, improvements to our library, increasing student services and adding new programs. So that we can address these kinds of needs in a timely manner, we have established the Palm Desert Campus Endowment, which we are hoping to build to $5 million over the next ten years.  We are inviting supporters who wish to give smaller gifts to help the campus grow to support the Palm Desert Campus Endowment.
